TRAINING INTENSITY I have stated before that most anything over 85% max effort is counterproductive to growth. There are exceptions, of course, as in all things.....however, for the natural the 85% rule should be followed if muscular growth is your goal. I have always been a fan of volume training, possibly because I started there as a teen. With that said, it took many years to develop a program that gave the best of both worlds: volume and intensity. I can recall doing a leg workout of 35 sets in 1 hour and 30 min. Walking out of the gym feeling completely used and wanting to just go to sleep. This is an example of using 100% maximum effort. What I didn t know at the time was that I had set myself back that whole week because of that workout. Fast forward some years and I can complete 25 sets of legs in 45 min. The intensity has gone from extreme volume to taking more and placing it in less time. This is of course the sprinters analogy. A long distance runner uses a lot of energy over a long period of time and therefore the long distance runner is very lean and thin. The sprinter uses the same amount of energy, over a very short period of time and sprinter s tend to be more muscular and built. I have completed a shoulder routine in 15 min......finished and the pump would come on the way home! It s an amazing feeling how the muscle was shocked and reacted to such a workout. The key is moving very fast, very heavy and having absolutely no distractions. No music, no water, no talking, just focusing. I find that workouts like these leave me not only with a great pump, but feeling amazing afterward, which is what you should always feel after you ve exercised....never exhausted. #naturalbodybuilding
