May 29th, 1940 - On this day in World War Two history, Off Dunkirk, German torpedo boats and the Luftwaffe sink British destroyers Wakeful, Grafton, and Grenade, and many other ships, killing over 1000 Allied troops. The evacuation, codenamed Operation Dynamo, had begun on May 26th, and although only around 7,000 troops were successfully evacuated on the first day, 340,000 would be taken to the safety of England by June 4th. The German Panzer and ground units may have been halted outside the port city, but the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine continued to savagely torment the allies pinned on the beach and attempting to escape. That is, the German Airforce and Navy was charged with the task of destroying or bringing the allies to a surrender, and they would try very hard to do so. These branches of the German Wehrmacht carried out devastating strafing s, bombings, and torpedo attacks against the trapped British and French troops. The allies did not succumb to surrender though, and through the rallying of every available naval and merchant ships along with fishing and private boats, they successfully evacuated the bulk of the men at Dunkirk. U-boat attack were horrific, as the boats were to packed with men that not many survived, and the strafing on the beaches was not much more merciful. Due to the hast needed in the evacuation, the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) had to abandon most its its tanks, vehicles, and other supplies and equipment vital to an army. They were evacuating to save themselves, as it was more important to have the army than to have the tanks, or the trucks. If the entire BEF had been captured, Britain would have struggled immensely to call up an army, and the Germans may have been able to easily overwhelm them in the months to come. The halting of his troops is often seen as one of Hitler s greatest mistakes, and it truly was. There was no reason to halt his panzers, and the excuse that there was not enough fuel is not enough as they would not have been needed to go much further. God bless Hitler s poor decisions. This picture depicts British and French troops as they evacuate Dunkirk on a private boat.
