Deep neck flexor strengthening
As a result of our stooped postures we typically develop weak and inhibited deep neck flexors, the 'core of our cervical spine
Evidence continues to show a correlation between decreased deep neck flexor strength and neck pain
These are 3 exercise progressions to train the core muscles of your neck:
➡️chin tuck: more difficult to perform properly than it looks. Avoid bending the entire neck forward as this will bias your bigger SCM muscles. Focus on lengthening the back of your neck and pushing your head into a pillow or towel. Hold for 5 sec and repeat 10x
➡️chin tuck with retraction: a progression to the previous supine exercise as we take it up against a wall. Adding the retraction with the band helps recruit other postural muscles ➡️chin tuck in quadruped: most difficult progression of the 3 as we chin tuck against gravity. Requires increased activation of the deep neck flexors as you stabilize the shoulder girdle during the chin tuck against resistance

Here are the limitation (most to least) findings based on my assessment: Knee Flexion (due to major knee surgery), T-Spine/shoulder mobility, Motor Control/Breathing Pattern, and Ankle. -

👀 Stop being a shady car mechanic and stop going to them!
🔨 Everyone dreads going to the mechanic because they don't know exactly what's going wrong with their car. You go in for an oil change and you're told so many terrible things about the state of your car that you might wonder how the hell it's still able to drive.
💉 The same can happen when you go see a healthcare practitioner for pain. You hear things like SI out of alignment, slipped disc, muscles that are asleep, discrepancy, etc. Then you start to think about how you're a functioning human being.
💬 The problem with both scenarios? Most of the time there is actually nothing wrong with your car or your body. Most of these factors do not have a strong correlation to pain nor do they happen(SI joints don't go out of alignment and disc don't slip). So...what really happens most of the time? The external load(stress) exceeds your body's capacity to resist it.
📋 There are a lot of things that add onto the pain your feeling. The problem with healthcare practitioners telling you things are out of whack is that they are just BUILDING on false information creating a nocebo effect. Then the focus shifts to fixing these so called "impairments" or "dysfunctions" as opposed to gradually exposing you to loads that will make you stronger.
✊ Look for a car mechanic that doesn't want to replace every part of your car because your parts are probably fine and changing it won't change the performance. The same goes for your health practitioner.

Lateral Hop Test with a patient who is 6-months post ACL reconstruction with a quadriceps tendon autograft. Which side do you think is the surgical side? It can be difficult to tell. Look carefully and you may see slightly more stiffness during landing on the left leg.
I like this test because it will reveal confidence, lateral agility, strength, and RFD (rate of force development). The patient laterally hops over 2 lines, which are 40cm apart for 30 seconds. Count the number of lines crossed and compare sides. Subject should be within 4 +/-3 hops between sides.
